Breast Plate with Gorget

A breastplate with a gorget is a medieval armor set protecting the chest (breastplate) and neck (gorget), evolving from functional defense to a status symbol for officers, later becoming decorative insignia with distinct shapes and materials. It was a crucial part of knightly armor, later reduced to just these pieces as firearms advanced, and even used by Aboriginal leaders in Australia as “king plates,” modified gorgets indicating authority. Essential for knightly protection, connecting the helmet and breastplate. These became a way to identify commissioned officers on duty, with variations in material (gilt, silver) denoting rank. Adopted by colonial authorities in Australia as “king plates” (gorgets) for Aboriginal leaders, though this differed from traditional culture.  Popular for LARP, cosplay, and historical reenactments (e.g., medieval, Renaissance).
